certified-0rca:

Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.

This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. (x)

Red Velvet Ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis) _5239 by Eric Gofreed on Flickr.

Two things are very important to remember about these beautiful little ants. 1. They are NOT ANTS. They are wingless WASPS! And 2; their stinger is VERY PAINFUL as I recently found out.

This is a female. Males have wings and look like wasps.

^^ I was so excited about this was an ant… :( i hate when the common name do not match with the specie, like “Killer Whale” or “Mantis shrimp”  :((((

Filaments of Photosynthesis

Meet some wonderfully symmetrical desmids, microscopically mirrored members of the plant kingdom. These green algae, an ancient branch on the tree of modern plant evolution, are unique in their hemispheric patterning. Jennifer Frazer has not one but two informative and image-heavy posts to teach you more about these single-celled snowflakes: How they move, how they reproduce, and how they share a history with even mighty redwoods.
